NEC Named to the 'Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations' List

Tokyo, February 1, 2011 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today its selection to the 'Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World' for the first time.

The 'Global 100' was established in 2005 by the Corporate Knights Inc. of Canada in recognition of global corporations that perform well in terms of environmental, social and governance issues.

This year's Global 100 was announced on January 29, 2011 at the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. Evaluation was based on 3,500 companies from around the world; the Top 100 originate from 22 countries and represent a wide range of business fields. Japan led way with 19 companies, the USA followed with 13, the UK 11 and Canada 8.

  • Energy Productivity: Sales / Total direct and indirect energy consumption
  • Carbon Productivity: Sales / Total CO2 and CO2 equivalents emissions
  • Water Productivity: Sales / Total water use
  • Waste Productivity: Sales / Total amount of waste produced
  • Leadership Diversity: % women board directors
  • CEO-to-average worker pay: Ratio of highest paid officer's compensation to average employee compensation (3-year average)
  • % Tax Paid: % reported tax obligation paid in cash (3-year average)
  • Safety Productivity: Sales / lost-time incidents and fatalities
  • Sustainability Remuneration: Whether or not at least one senior officer has his/her pay linked to sustainability
  • Innovation Capacity: R&D / sales (3-year average)
  • Transparency: % of data points on which the company provided data and level of GRI disclosure
